Bright Futures LED Lighting Project

Traditional theatre lighting uses a great deal of electricity and generates a large amount of heat. A typical production might require 30 or more lighting instruments, each of which uses between 500 and 1000 watts.

The Bright Futures Project is the first stage in converting all of our lighting to modern LED instruments. Why would we do this?

• ENVIRONMENTALLY RESPONSIBLE:  LED lights use a small fraction of the power needed for traditional lighting.
• ARTISTIC CONTROL AND FLEXIBILITY:  Each LED instrument can be easily programmed for millions of colours. Traditional lamps put out white light (approximately) which must be tinted using coloured “gels”. That means that to add a different colour to a show, you must have a different instrument for each desired colour. The same LED instrument can emit an infinite number of colours during the same performance.
• SUBTLETY AND SPECIAL TRANSITIONS:  For the same reason, LEDs allow much greater subtlety in the use of colour. Colours can gradually fade into one another or  can flash different colours. 
• REDUCE LABOUR:  A smaller number of instruments mean a lot less moving and climbing of ladders for technicians. Settings are “dialed in” and easily changed from the lighting booth.
• AUDIENCE COMFORT:  It will be easier to keep the theatre at a comfortably cool temperature throughout the performance, especially in summer..

LED lighting is the responsible thing to do for the environment while enhancing audience experience in both subtle and spectacular ways.
