Mary, Mary

by James Bowlby

A new script is always exciting, especially when it has taken considerable time to research, write and rewrite. Shuswap Theatre is planning a public play reading on January 31 at 7:30 pm of James Bowlby’s original play Mary, Mary.

Centred on Mary 1 of England (Mary Tudor), eldest daughter of Henry VIII, it portrays a woman fighting to be seen as equal to men in a time when it was necessary to resist the belief that her husband would naturally take over as ruler. In addition Mary 1 left a terrible legacy created not by her own actions but by the Protestants and her half sister, Elizabeth I, who succeeded her. As Oscar Wilde said, “Mary did more evil after she died than she did during her lifetime.” The play takes on intrigue as a university grad student tries to find the truth about “Bloody Mary.”

Anyone wishing to take part in the reading please email James or call him at 250-832-8383. There will be two rehearsals prior to the performance.
