Theatre on the Edge 2016

Shuswap Theatre’s summer festival of brave and bold theatre, was a big success with a third more tickets sold than last year. Theatre goers loved the ambience of the festival, with outdoor Edge Club musicians performing between plays. Many thanks to the musicians who volunteered their time and talent. Productions were featured from Vernon, Kamloops, Kelowna and Vancouver, as well as the Shuswap, offering comedy, cabaret, puppetry, and one-act plays.

We are all grateful to Jaci Metivier, festival producer, and her dedicated crew for making it all happen. Thanks also to our patrons for helping to make Salmon Arm a summer destination for theatre. We hope you’ll be back next year.

This was the 2016 Lineup:

imageParental Guidance

A comedy presented by Powerhouse Theatre
Vernon, BC

Parents don’t always do the right thing by their children. This series of four short plays reveals some of the hidden dysfunctions of family life, and how the efforts of parents can be touching, ridiculous and often funny. Sometimes they need some guidance!

A new mother in the hospital tries to return an item. A distracted mother tries to entice her daughter out of a tree to enjoy her birthday party. Siblings compare different sides of their newly dead parent. And an examination of the American Dream shows how personal agendas can change family dynamics. Come out and see how funny life’s foibles can be.

Powerhouse Theatrical Society has been performing in the community of Vernon for over 50 years now. They are always looking for ways to broaden the knowledge base within the membership and like to offer new directors a venue to explore their craft. Theatre on the Edge is the perfect showcase for this, and offers an opportunity to explore stories that may not have a place within the regular theatre season.

The Comedian

The Comedian

A one man comedy by Calvin White

The Comedian features Eddy Domino played by Calvin White. This is liberation comedy at its wildest. Prepare to laugh as hilarity takes on absurdity in politically incorrect stand-up. Race, religion, politics, panties, fire extinguishers, and the death of the planet are exposed as only the comedian can do it. Think George Carlin crossed with Chris Rock and you get Eddie Domino. The result is everyone leaves less constricted, less controlled, and just a bit raunchier.

Devon More Music_Berlin WaltzBerlin Waltz

A one woman musical performance by

Devon More

A Cold War Cabaret that tells the complete story – from BOTH sides of that infamous Wall.  Featuring sock puppets, the Stasi, satire – and ukulele!  Set in the city at the centre of the 20th century, to the original tunes of Devon More – this is the Berlin history lesson you never knew you wanted.

Devon More is a musician, singer-songwriter, storyteller, feminist, polyglot, and activist.  She is obsessed with the power of melody and language, and asks too many questions.

Devon More released her debut album, Foolish Youth, in 2014 and broke onto the Fringe Festival circuit later in 2014 with Silent Party Interlude – a musical retelling of her experience at a 10-day silent meditation retreat.  Berlin Waltz premiered at the 2015 Calgary Fringe Festival and was shortlisted for the Vancouver Fringe’s 2016 New Play Prize. Devon is a graduate of the Thompson Rivers University theatre program.   www.devonmoremusic.com

Seniors Fun

The Essence of Me

A comedy presented by

The Third House Multimedia

When George gets a late night phone call from the Shady Rest Retirement Centre to let him know that his mother is gone, he is saddened by her passing.  But when he finds out that his mother is not dead, but has simply gone, he is irate. “She’s an old woman—where could she go?”  Not only that, most of the other residents have gone with her.  And…they can’t be found.  As his mother tells us, “We don’t even have to hide.  That’s because we’re invisible.  We spend most of our lives being invisible.” Well, this group of seniors is no longer invisible.  They have something to say about being a senior who still has something to contribute and wants to stay involved.

Ida and Old Baldy’s Seniors’ Theatre Project began four years ago.  This spring, the project took a new direction with script-writing workshops and The Essence of Me is the first product of those incredibly active minds.  The first—but not the last.  We have got a lot to say!  www.thethirdhouse.ca

Runaway Moon
Robin and the Timeless Forest

Family puppet theatre by

Runaway Moon Theatre

Runaway Moon Youth Theatre (2016) is going back to the company’s roots this summer with the magic of marionettes. Five young artists are writing, creating, and performing a new show for family audiences, tentatively titled Robin and the Edge of the Forst. This new show will be small in scale, but extraordinary in scope and effect, conjuring up a cast of many unexpected characters who inhabit a world filled with surprises and fantastical twists. This show is sure to appeal to both young and old.

Runaway Moon Theatre has its home and puppet museum in Grindrod, but has been creating shows of many different proportions in places across the valley since 2000. The two main interests of the company are puppet theatre and large-scale community art projects which are often also theatrical in nature. These projects involve many people from different walks of life.  www.runawaymoontheatre.org

Saucy Fops 1sm

Time Signatures

Comedy by Saucy Fops

Kamloops’ Saucy Fops, creators of last years Back and Forth and Back, return with a comedic look at the pacing and rhythm of life’s signature times.  Using sharp dialog, movement and a few tempo changes, Time Signatures reveals the soundtrack behind our everyday interactions.  And then we fade out.

The Saucy Fops write, create and produce all of their own work.  The Fops have toured across Canada with the Canadian Fringe Festival to much acclaim, earning themselves 3 different Best of Fest Awards. They are proud to call Kamloops, BC, their home base and have been doing productions there for 15 years.  Last year the Fops were a favorite of the inaugural Theatre On the Edge Festival (Shuswap Theatre) with Back and Forth and Back (written by Cayman Duncan) and are very excited to be back to see those wonderful audiences!  www.saucyfops.com
