A Message from the Board of Shuswap Theatre -

The Board has initiated a series of member and audience focus groups and surveys and wants you to know we’re listening. If you would like to provide any comments, feedback or suggestions in a confidential (no-name) manner, feel free to use this on-line link at any time. Or you can drop off a written comment to the wooden mailbox in the upper office to the right of the photocopier.

We thank those of you that have shared with us so far and, with the assistance of Michelle Ambrose Consulting, the Board will be using the data she has been collecting from members and Theatre goers at our full-day Visioning Retreat at the end of May.

The purpose of the Board is to govern the society in such a way that its mission is fulfilled so that it is effective, efficient and financially sustainable. Our Mission:

Our passion is to provide our audiences with excellent dramatic entertainment ranging from pure fun to thought-provoking drama.
We choose plays appealing to our audience while developing the capacities of our company.
Our goal is to entice ever greater numbers of people into the joy of live theatre, whether as cast, crew or audience.

Over the past few years the Board has been working toward being less of a “managing” Board and more of a “visionary” one. In other words we have been developing policy that empowers and guides various groups and individuals to carry on the day-to-day business of running the Theatre, while the Board spends more time considering where we are going and how we can get there. We are looking for ways to spend our time more effectively on the things that really matter, to be forward thinking.

City Awards Grant to Theatre

We are pleased to acknowledge the grant of $2500 that we recently received from the City of Salmon Arm. We requested this grant so that we could replace several of the “blacks” that are a standard part of any theatre’s equipment. Blacks are the heavy, black curtains that are often hung at the back and sides of the stage. They must be light proof and fire proof and they don’t come cheap. Our gratitude goes to the City for this generous support.

Ozone Festival (2013) schedule

Drama festivals are a great way to develop our talent and skills in doing quality live theatre. It’s also just a great time to rub shoulders with others working in community theatre. The coffee critiques each morning are especially valuable as a learning tool and entertaining in their own right.

We encourage all Shuswap Theatre members and theatre lovers to attend as much of the festival as possible. And this year it’s in Vernon, just a stone’s throw away. It would also be great to have lots of Salmon Armites and Shuswapians to cheer on our own festival entry, The Herbal Bed.

Here are the plays on offer at this year’s festival:

Monday May 13 – Oleanna by David Mamet, The Hub Arts Collective, Vernon
Tuesday May 14 – Venus In Fur by David Ives, Fred Skeleton, Kelowna
Wed May 15 – Caught in the Net by Ray Cooney, Theatre Kelowna Society
Thursday 16 – The Herbal Bed by Peter Whelan, Shuswap Theatre, Salmon Arm
Friday 17 – God of Carnage by Yasmina Reza, translated by Christopher Hampton, Kamloops Players

New Policy on Honorary Life Memberships

The Shuswap Theatre Board has adopted a new policy to clarify how and when Honorary Life Memberships are to be awarded. Among other things the new policy makes it possible to do a better job of arranging a proper ceremony of recognition for someone being honored in this way. To read the policy click here . Blarney Time Cancelled

All Those Backstage People Do What?

What It Takes to Put On a Production

Have you ever thought of becoming involved in theatre but feel you don’t know enough about it? Or would you like to try your hand at an area that you haven’t ventured into before? Or perhaps you’re just curious. If so this workshop is for you.

You’ll get a snapshot of all that goes into making a production happen, from the initial planning to the final performance. Many people are involved. Our expert facilitators will each give a rich overview of what they do and how it contributes to the piece of magic that is the final show. You will go home with a mini Theatre Handbook, you’ll know whom to contact for what, and you’ll have great memories of a unique experience.
